The Elder Scrolls 6: Everything We Know in 2026 — And Why the Wait Is Far From Over

Where Development Stands Right Now

The good news first. In a November 2025 interview, Howard

stated that The Elder Scrolls 6 had become the studio's primary development priority.  In a 2026 roundtable interview, Howard revealed that "the majority" of the studio is now working on The Elder Scrolls 6, so things are ramping up significantly in terms of development.

The not-so-good news? Seven and a half years post-announcement, the release date is still "a while yet" — with Howard reaffirming his regret about revealing the game so early.

Howard explained that the team prefers to establish a solid core for the game before shifting a larger portion of staff to the project to accelerate development — a methodology designed to ensure the studio maintains quality across its portfolio.

A "Classic" Bethesda RPG — Back to Roots

March 2026 brought some of the most meaningful updates fans have received in years. Howard confirmed that TES6 will go back to the "classic" Bethesda-style games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim, citing Starfield and Fallout 76 as deviations from the team's usual formula. The team has also reached a mysterious "big milestone" for TES6, and Howard confirmed that TES6 is using Bethesda's new in-house Creation Engine 3

This is a significant statement. After the mixed reception of Starfield — a game that many felt strayed too far from Bethesda's handcrafted world-building roots — the promise of a return to immersive, interconnected open-world design is exactly what fans have been desperate to hear.

No AI-Generated Content — Howard Is Clear

One question looming over every major game studio in 2026 is the role of artificial intelligence in development. Howard has been crystal clear: Bethesda is being "incredibly cautious" with AI, viewing it purely as a data analysis tool for "big data tasks" — and emphatically states "we're not using it to generate anything."

For fans of Bethesda's deeply hand-crafted worlds, this is reassuring news.

When Will It Actually Release?

Here's where things get complicated — and honest. Todd Howard stated in a February 2026 interview that The Elder Scrolls 6's launch "is going to be a while yet," confirming the sentiment in the fanbase that the game is not coming anytime soon.

YouTuber and reliable insider Reece Reilly claimed that Bethesda has set an internal release date of 2028, though there is also a strong chance it could be pushed even further into 2029. The insider stated: "They aren't giving a rough date because, quite frankly, it will do more harm than good — especially after announcing this game too early."

Where Is It Set?

The location of TES6 remains officially unconfirmed — but the clues point strongly in one direction. Judging by the terrain in the announcement trailer, it looks like TES6 is taking us to either Hammerfell, home of the Redguard people, or High Rock, where the Breton race originates.

Adding credence to the Hammerfell rumor is a post from the official Elder Scrolls Twitter account that shows an unmapped Hammerfell region.  Hammerfell — with its sweeping deserts, coastal cities and warrior culture — would be a visually stunning and narratively fresh setting after Skyrim's frozen Nordic landscape.

Xbox Exclusive? The Platform Question

We're still awaiting official word on platforms, but speculation surrounding whether Elder Scrolls 6 will be an Xbox exclusive has persisted for years. A document released during the FTC v. Microsoft case seemed to suggest exclusivity, claiming that once the game launches, it will be on Xbox and PC.

However, Todd Howard said in 2020 that "it's hard to imagine" not bringing The Elder Scrolls 6 to multiple platforms — leaving the door at least slightly open for a PlayStation release down the line.

A Fun Detail: Skyrim Grandma Will Be an NPC

Amid all the uncertainty, one confirmed detail has delighted the community. YouTuber Shirley Curry — more widely known as "Skyrim Grandma" — will appear as an NPC in The Elder Scrolls 6, after a fan petition racked up 49,322 signatures to make it happen. . A wholesome moment in an otherwise agonizing wait.

The Verdict: Patience Required

The Elder Scrolls 6 is no longer a distant dream — it's in active, full-scale development with the majority of Bethesda's talent behind it. Creation Engine 3, a return to classic RPG design, no AI-generated content, and a mysterious "big milestone" all suggest a team that knows exactly what they're building.

But 2028 — or even 2029 — is the realistic window. And after Skyrim, one of the greatest RPGs ever made, the only question that matters is: will it be worth the wait?

If Todd Howard has anything to say about it — it will be.
