A Major System Update Just Landed

Sony began rolling out a new PS5 system update on March 16, introducing headline features to the Pro variant while also bringing a smaller Welcome Hub addition to the standard PS5.

The star of the update is PSSR 2.0 — PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony's proprietary AI-powered upscaling technology. The enhanced PSSR model delivers sharper and clearer visuals in supported games, and players can enable it by navigating to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.

But base PS5 owners weren't left behind either. The latest firmware brings system-wide improvements to the standard console including optimized resource management for faster menu transitions, enhanced compatibility for external storage devices, and refined network stability protocols for online multiplayer.

One more welcome addition: Unicode 17.0 emojis are now supported in messages, and a new Showcase Mode lets you display a full view of your Welcome Hub background when the console is idle.

PS5 Pro Gets a Massive Boost: 12 Games Upgraded at Once

The PS5 Pro is finally living up to the hype its launch promised. As of this week, the 2.0 version of PSSR is now compatible with a dozen PS5 games, featuring titles from some of the biggest developers and publishers in the world — including Konami, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Capcom, and even Xbox.

Crimson Desert, the massive open-world RPG, launched this week as one of the first games to be immediately compatible with PSSR 2.0. Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin's Creed Shadows are also confirmed to be getting upgrades soon.

March 2026: One of PS5's Biggest Months for Games

The game lineup this month has been nothing short of extraordinary. March has seen major releases across multiple genres — including Marathon, the new extraction shooter from Bungie; Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection; WWE 2K26; MLB The Show 26; and the highly anticipated open-world RPG Crimson Desert.

On the PS Plus front, this month's Extra and Premium catalog additions include Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and the newly released Metal Eden.

What's Coming Next: Starfield, GTA 6, and More

The second half of 2026 is shaping up to be even more stacked. Starfield is confirmed to be coming to PlayStation 5 on April 7  a landmark moment for Xbox fans who never expected Bethesda's space epic to land on Sony's platform.

Further down the road, Marvel's Wolverine remains one of the most anticipated PS5 exclusives on the horizon, alongside a wealth of other major titles set to release throughout the rest of the year.

PSN Is Getting Rebranded

In a surprising move, Sony is set to phase out its PlayStation Network and PSN branding by September 2026, according to an internal email. The change will reportedly be purely visual and won't involve any technical alterations to the online service.

Conclusion

The PlayStation 5 in March 2026 is a console at the peak of its power. With PSSR 2.0 breathing new life into existing titles, a firmware update that benefits both standard and Pro owners, and a game library that keeps expanding at a breathtaking pace, there has never been a better time to be a PlayStation fan.

Five years in — and the best may still be yet to come.
