Mortal Kombat II: The Tournament Begins on May 8, 2026 — Everything You Need to Know

A Long Wait

Mortal Kombat II is the fourth film in the Mortal Kombat series, directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, and serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 film.

The film originally targeted an October 2025 release, but was pushed back to May 2026.  A decision that, judging by the trailers that have surfaced, proved to be a wise one — the production gained valuable time for finishing touches.

The Story: The Tournament Has Truly Begun

Fan-favorite champions — now joined by Johnny Cage himself — are pitted against each other in a supreme battle, rule-free and full of violence, to defeat the dark reign of Shao Kahn, who threatens the existence of Earthrealm and its defenders.

Liu Kang takes on the responsibility of choosing fighters capable of standing up to Outworld's adversaries, while Shao Kahn is officially introduced as the film's main villain.

The Cast — Old and New Faces

Returning cast members include: Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Lewis Tan, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion).

The big newcomers are:

  • Karl Urban as Johnny Cage . — the actor known from The Boys and Thor, who promises to bring all of the character's sarcastic charm to life.
  • Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade  — two of the most popular fighters from the games, now on the big screen for the first time in this reboot.
  • Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi — two of the most feared villains in the franchise.

Johnny Cage — The Long-Awaited Star

Johnny Cage was absent from the first film, which received mixed reviews, and now finally makes his on-screen debut. Karl Urban looks perfectly cast in the role of the iconic character, and the sequel appears far more faithful to the games than the 2021 entry — whether it's the amped-up action or Cage's signature sarcasm.

Even in the trailer, Urban delivers one of the funniest lines of the year: when a fan asks for a reboot of his iconic show, Cage dryly replies: "Nobody wants that. It ended in the '90s."

A Film That's Part of a Trilogy

Screenwriter Greg Russo, co-writer of the 2021 film, envisions the reboot as a trilogy: the first film takes place before the tournament, the second — during the tournament, and the third — after it.

Even before the release of the second film, New Line Cinema confirmed that work on Mortal Kombat 3 has already begun, with Jeremy Slater signed on to write the screenplay.

Finish Him — On May 8, 2026

Mortal Kombat II promises to be bigger, more brutal, and more faithful to the spirit of the games than anything we've seen from this franchise before. With an outstanding cast, a colossal villain, and the tournament finally taking place for real — May 8, 2026 cannot come soon enough.

Fatality guaranteed.
